Ingredients

Main Ingredients
  • 1 oz gin (or non-alcoholic gin alternative) Use a non-alcoholic gin for a lighter option.
  • 1 oz sweet red vermouth Choose low-sugar vermouth for a low calorie, diabetic-friendly version.
  • 1 oz Campari or bitter orange liqueur
  • 1/4 oz blood orange juice or grenadine Use sugar-free grenadine to make it low carb.
  • 1 piece orange peel or blood orange wheel For garnish.
Optional Enhancements
  • 1 dash soda water For a lighter, lower-alcohol serve.
  • 1 piece candied blood orange or maraschino cherry Optional garnish.

Method

Preparation
  1. Chill your glass in the freezer for 5–10 minutes.
  2. In a mixing glass, add gin, sweet vermouth, Campari, and blood orange juice (or grenadine).
  3. Add plenty of ice to the mixing glass. Stir for 20–30 seconds until well chilled.
  4. Strain the mix into a rocks glass filled with one large ice cube or fresh ice.
  5. Express an orange peel over the glass by pinching it to release oils, then run it around the rim and drop the peel in. Add a blood orange wheel if you like.
  6. For a lighter option, top with a splash of soda water and stir gently.

Notes

For good flavor balance, serve the cocktail with high-protein foods. This drink can also be made in batches for parties.
