Ingredients
  

Doughnut Ingredients
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup sourdough starter
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1 tablespoon yeast
  • 1 large egg
  • 2 tablespoons butter, melted
  • as needed Vegetable oil for frying
Glaze Ingredients
  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 2 tablespoons milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Method
 

Preparation
  1. In a bowl, mix the sourdough starter, milk, melted butter, and egg until well combined.
  2. In another bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, salt, nutmeg, and cinnamon. Add this to the wet ingredients and mix until a dough forms.
  3. Knead the dough for about 5 minutes until it’s smooth.
  4. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover it, and let it rise for 1-2 hours until it has doubled in size.
  5. Roll out the dough on a floured surface to about 1/2 inch thick, and cut out doughnuts using a cutter.
  6. Let the doughnuts rise for another 30 minutes.
Cooking
  1. Heat oil in a deep fryer or pot to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Fry the doughnuts until golden brown, about 1-2 minutes on each side.
  3. Remove the doughnuts and drain them on paper towels.
Glazing
  1. For the glaze, whisk together the powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla extract.
  2. Dip each doughnut into the glaze while still warm.
  3. Serve and enjoy!

Notes

Sourdough doughnuts can be served plain, with a sprinkle of cinnamon, or drizzled with honey. Pair them with fresh fruit for added fiber and vitamins. Store in an airtight container for up to 2 days or freeze for up to a month.
