  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1.5 cups warm water Temperature should be around 110°F (43°C)
  • 2.25 teaspoons active dry yeast
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 0.25 cups olive oil
Topping Ingredients
  • 0.25 cups baking soda For the pretzel wash
  • 2 tablespoons melted butter For brushing on top
  • Coarse salt for garnish
  • Dipping sauce of choice (honey mustard, cheesy beer sauce, etc.)

Method
 

Preparation
  1. In a bowl, combine warm water, sugar, and yeast. Let it sit for about 5 minutes until frothy.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine flour and salt. Add the yeast mixture and olive oil, mixing until a dough forms.
  3. Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  4. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise for about 8 hours or overnight in the fridge.
Baking
  1. Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C).
  2. Once the dough has risen, punch it down and place it in a greased 9x13 inch baking pan.
  3. In a separate bowl, mix baking soda with hot water and brush the mixture over the dough.
  4. Sprinkle coarse salt on top.
  5. Bake for 24 to 30 minutes until golden brown.
  6. Brush with melted butter and serve with your favorite dipping sauces.

Notes

To keep it healthy, serve in smaller portions. This bread pairs well with light dips and salads. Consider variations like using half whole wheat flour for added fiber or adding seeds for a protein boost.
