Ingredients

For the latte
  • 2 shots hot espresso or 1/2 cup very strong brewed coffee Use strong coffee if no espresso machine.
  • 3/4 cup store-bought eggnog, well chilled before heating Use dairy or dairy-free eggnog.
  • 1/4 cup milk of choice, dairy or non-dairy Almond, oat, or cashew milk are great choices.
  • 1 to 2 teaspoons sugar, maple syrup, or vanilla syrup to taste Adjust sweetness to preference.
  • 1/4 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • 1 pinch of ground nutmeg plus more for topping Freshly grated nutmeg is recommended.
  • Optional splash of rum or bourbon For an adults-only version.
  • Optional whipped cream and a sprinkle of cinnamon For topping.

Method

Preparation
  1. Brew espresso or strong coffee and keep it hot.
  2. Warm eggnog and milk gently on the stove over low heat, whisking often. Do not boil.
  3. Whisk in vanilla, sweetener, and a pinch of nutmeg.
  4. Froth the warm eggnog mixture with a handheld frother, or shake in a heat-safe jar.
  5. Pour espresso into a large mug and top with the frothy eggnog mixture.
  6. Finish with whipped cream, a dust of nutmeg, and a tiny sprinkle of cinnamon.
  7. Optionally, add a splash of bourbon or rum before pouring in the hot milk mixture.

Notes

Use fresh nutmeg for better aroma. If eggnog is thick, thin with a bit more milk before heating. This latte can be made ahead by mixing eggnog, milk, vanilla, and sweetener and heating as needed.
