Ingredients

Dry ingredients
  • 2.5 cups all-purpose flour Can substitute half with whole wheat flour for a healthier option.
  • 1 Tbsp baking powder
  • 0.5 tsp baking soda
  • 1 Tbsp sugar
  • 0.5 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 Tbsp dried chives Can substitute parsley.
Wet ingredients
  • 0.5 cup butter, frozen and grated Keep in the freezer until needed.
  • 0.75 cup sharp cheddar cheese, shredded
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 2 Tbsp melted butter To brush on the biscuits after baking.

Method

Preparation
  1. Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. Grate the frozen butter using a box grater and return to the freezer.
  3. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, sugar, salt, garlic powder, and chives.
  4. Add the grated frozen butter and shredded cheddar cheese to the flour mixture, tossing to coat.
  5. Create a well in the center of the mixture and pour in the buttermilk. Stir gently with a fork until just combined.
  6. On a lightly floured surface, bring the dough together, forming a rectangle.
  7. Lightly roll the dough to about 3/4 inch thick, fold it in thirds, then roll out again, repeating 3-4 times.
Cutting and Baking
  1. Roll the dough to about an inch thick and cut out biscuits using a biscuit cutter.
  2. Arrange the biscuits on the prepared baking sheet, touching slightly.
  3. Place the pan in the freezer for 10 minutes to keep the ingredients cold.
  4. Brush the tops with milk or buttermilk before baking.
  5. Bake for 14-16 minutes or until golden brown on top.
  6. Remove from the oven and brush with melted butter before serving warm.

Notes
